How body age is calculated
- What this number is
- A lifestyle score expressed in years. It is not a measurement of your body, and no biological sample is taken or analysed.
- What it uses
- Eighteen self-reported answers: your age band, plus seventeen lifestyle factors across smoking, alcohol, exercise, sitting time, sleep length and quality, stress, diet, vegetable intake, water, weight band, blood pressure, social connection, sunlight, learning, family history and existing conditions.
- How it is weighted
- Your age band sets the baseline. Each answer then adds or subtracts years, between minus three and plus eight, and the total is your estimate. Those weights are OUR OWN construction, chosen to reflect the direction and rough strength of well-established associations. They are not taken from any published algorithm and have not been validated against outcomes.
- What it is NOT
- It is not PhenoAge, GrimAge, a telomere test or any blood-based biological-age panel. Those measure biomarkers; this asks questions. Two people with identical answers get the identical number, which a real biological-age assay would not produce.
Why these factors
- Smoking, physical activity, diet and alcohol are the four modifiable behaviours most consistently linked to mortality risk in large cohort studies.
- Short and poor-quality sleep are independently associated with cardiovascular and metabolic risk.
- Social connection and blood pressure both carry well-documented associations with healthy lifespan.
